New Techniques

Seed Bead Embroidery
Designed by Katie Hacker

Here's a new take on an old favorite technique: seed bead embroidery. New, tiny metal seed beads from TierraCast combine with traditional glass seeds for a colorful, textural effect. The center of the design is comprised of several metal elements layered together. They're stitched into place on a piece of leather that's attached to a metal filigree pendant.

Materials
TierraCast:
#93-0447-12    20 antique silver seed beads
#94-5778-27    brass oxide royal pinch bail
#94-3134-26    antique gold 1" beaded ring
#94-3145-12    antique silver 6-petal flower link
#93-0407-26    antique gold beaded spacer
#94-6016-27    brass oxide bar &ring toggle clasp
WildFire .006" black beading thread from Beadalon
Your favorite floral metal filigree pendant
Turquoise tilapia leather from NatureBeads.com
Antique brass chain from Garlan Chain
Matte turquoise cylindrical glass seed beads

Tools: #12 beading needle, scissors, E6000 adhesive

1. Glue the brass ring to a piece of leather and let it dry completely.

2. Cut a 24" length of beading thread and thread it onto the needle.

3. Knot the thread end and pass the needle upward through the leather; add a metal seed bead, glass seed and metal bead.

4. Pass the needle downward through the leather and bring it back up to pass through the last bead a second time to backstitch it.

5. Continue adding beads around the outside of the ring, backstitching every third bead or so to secure the beads to the leather.

6. Stitch up through the center of the leather, passing through the center of the flower link and beaded spacer.

7. Pass through a glass seed bead and back downward through the center of the stacked components.

8. Stitch the leather piece to the center of the metal filigree pendant.

9. Attach a pinch bail to the upper loop on the pendant and slip it onto the center of a necklace chain.

10. Open the last chain links to attach half of the clasp to each end of the necklace.
