Using Permanent Markers on Metal
Designed by Katie Hacker

Color is such an important part of jewelry making and there are many ways to bring color into your designs. I learned this technique from Heidi Viau, owner of Lillypilly Designs and creator of the decorative metal pendants shown below.

You'll need: metal pendants,
permanent markers and polishing pads

1. Use a permanent marker to color un-treated metal.

2. Use a polishing pad to meld the color into the metal and remove any excess.

3. If desired, seal the metal using a metal-safe sealant like Renaissance Wax.

Materials:
Hand-colored pendant from Lillypilly Designs
(see above)
Ceramic bird link from EarthenwoodStudio.com
8mm Acai seed bead from NatureBeads.com
22-gauge hematite Artistic Wire
Black pinch bail, 2 spacer beads from TierraCast
Hematite ball chain necklace from Michaels

Tools: round-nose pliers, chain-nose pliers, wire cutter, metal hole punch

1. Cut a 6" length of wire and make a wrapped loop to attach it to the metal pendant.

2. Pass the long end of the wire through a spacer bead, acai seed and spacer bead.

3. Make a wrapped loop to attach the wire to the lower loop on the bird link.

4. Attach a pinch bail to the upper loop on the bird link to string it onto the ball chain necklace.
