Charms make it easy to add a personal touch to any of your jewelry creations, including earrings. They're available in a wide variety of styles with beautiful metallic finishes, but there are also many ways you can customize them with colorants from your craft closet.

Charms and pendants with antique finishes will accept colorants more readily than shiny ones. If you want to tint shiny surfaces, it may be necessary to use an emory board or light sanding block.

Be sure to cover your work surface (and your hands) before adding colors to your charms and pendants.

Alcohol inks: Apply ink to a piece of felt and press it onto a charm or pendant, or drip ink directly onto the surface. You can even use alcohol inks to add a light tint to rhinestones.

Permanent markers: Rub permanent marker over the surface of a charm or use it to make small designs on the surface. Rub away any excess marker with a polishing cloth or Pro Polish pad.

Paint Pens: Use a paint pen to highlight portions or to fill in larger areas on a charm's design.

Nail Polish: Since nail polish is essentially an enamel, you can use it to add color to metal charms and pendants. Use a light hand rather than adding heavy drops of color.
