Memory wire is a hardened steel wire that “remembers” its shape. In today’s beading lesson, we’ll show you some conventional and unexpected ways to use it.

Memory wire is basically one-size-fits-all and comes in pre-formed necklace, bracelet and ring sizes. You can make designs with single or multiple loops. The best memory wire is made from stainless steel and is corrosion and tarnish resistant. Silver and gold plated memory wire makes especially beautiful designs.

To work with memory wire, you’ll need: necklace, bracelet or ring-size wire and shears that are made especially for hardened wire. Do not use ordinary wire cutters because the memory wire will cut into the blades and ruin them. You may also want to use memory wire end caps and cyanoacrylic or epoxy glue.

You can use memory wire to create single and multiple-loop jewelry. Some examples of typical memory wire designs are: a bracelet using continuous beaded loops and a choker that uses two separate loops to create a cuff style.

There are a couple of ways to finish the ends. You can loop them or you can glue an end cap onto the end of the wire. End caps are available in a variety of shapes. Place a drop of epoxy or super glue on the end of the wire and press an end cap onto the wire. Epoxy is the best choice because it makes a durable metal-to-metal bond. String a few beads, then spot-glue the last few beads together to help hold the end cap in place.

You can also use rubber tubing to cover memory wire. It gives you the look of cord but allows you to use beads that have small holes. String the beads onto the center of the wire, then cut the tubing to fit each side.

Since memory wire always keeps its round shape, you can use it to create your own components as well. For eclectic earrings, use small bracelet-size memory wire to make beaded circles. First, string beads onto a ring. Glue the ends inside the last bead. Once they’re dry, make a bead link to attach it to an ear wire.

Memory wire napkin rings are a fun addition to any festive table. Use the small bracelet size.

For aunique necklace, use plated ring-size memory wire to make interconnected loops. The ends are glued inside the beads before attaching the loops to each other.
